Welcome to Jimiri! If you’re visiting this site, that means you’re interested in helping solve our country’s racial and ethnic challenges by building friendships, understanding, and empathy across racial lines. With our Youth Leadership Program, the solutions begin with our children.
Your child will be assigned to a group of 12 students representing different racial, ethnic, and geographic backgrounds, and together they’ll choose a common-interest activity such as art, digital photography, public speaking, or sports journalism.
Each week (for 8 weeks in the fall and 8 weeks in the spring), the Jimiri groups will meet on Sunday afternoons from 2:45 to 5:00 pm at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. The groups will be led by high-school and college students who serve as facilitators. Parent/teacher supervisors, including licensed educators and psychologists, will also be on hand to lend assistance. (Please visit our fall session and spring session pages for details, logistics, and FAQs.)
We hope the students will build lasting friendships with each other, and we hope they’ll be inspired to become future leaders in the cause of racial justice in America. The word “jimiri” means “beginning” or “start”, and our program is designed to promote racial healing beginning with young people in our country. Together, they can show us the way forward.
If you’re interested in enrolling your child, please fill out the form below. We’ll get back to you as soon as we can. Thank you for your interest in Jimiri!
