Jimiri Groups

Our Youth Leadership Program is designed for middle school students in the Detroit metropolitan area:

Participation is free. There’s no cost for students or parents.

Students self-identify their race, gender, home ZIP code, and school.  Based only on these demographic characteristics — and not on any personally identifying information — we assign students to groups to promote racial, gender, and geographic diversity for each group.

No. We want all students to begin the program on an equal social footing and to embrace the challenge of meeting new people and making new friends.

All meetups are located at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History (311 E. Warren Ave.)

No. Families will need to provide their own transportation each week. But we plan to bring back our free bus service in future sessions!

Jimiri groups meet on Sundays from 2:45 to 5:00 pm. (April 14 – May 19, 2024)

Facilitators are high school and college students who are trained in promoting group-building and facilitating discussions of racism in America.  Facilitators are recruited from local high schools and colleges and submit applications and short essays before selection.  Each Jimiri group is assigned three facilitators. 

Staff supervisors are parent/teacher volunteers, including licensed professionals in the areas of education, social work, and child psychology. 

Yes! Parents will receive a weekly summary of the activities and discussions from the student meetups each week.

Students are assigned a common-interest activity for their group, such as art, dance, digital photography, or theater. About 60 minutes of each meetup will be spent on these activities, including group-building exercises.
